Music is a huge part of my joy ritual and I hope you enjoy this song by “Tambor Urbano” and Afro-Venezuelan group on Spotify! Whether you’re dancing in your living room, driving with the windows down, or just taking a mindful moment to enjoy the music, let this be your moment to self-honor.

Please note: Spotify and its content are owned by Spotify AB. I do not claim ownership of the music shared in this post.

Every year, during the last week of April, I make a deliberate choice: Not to work on my birthday. No emails, no meetings, no obligations that drain my energy. Instead, I dedicate the day to joy, rest, and celebrating myself with intention.

Why I Prioritize Rest on My Birthday

Pictured: Me, a few years back, celebrating my birthday at brunch with a huge Dominican cake..my favorite. Why? Because…porque no?

For so long, I moved through life believing that rest had to be earned and believing that taking a full day for myself was indulgent, even selfish. But over time, I learned that rest isn’t a reward—it’s a requirement. What better day to fully embrace that than the day I entered this world? HELLO?!

Prioritizing joy and ease on my birthday is a way of affirming that I am worth celebrating—not just in big milestones, but in the everyday moments that make life rich and fulfilling.

What My Birthday Looks Like Now

Each year is different, but the core elements remain the same: ease, joy, and alignment with what nourishes me. Some of my favorite birthday traditions include:

Starting the day slowly—lingering in bed, enjoying a long stretch or meditation.
Spending time with my wife and children, soaking in love and laughter.
Moving my body with joy, whether it’s dancing, workout, or a leisurely walk.
Nourishing myself well, indulging in foods that bring me comfort and joy. Did you see that cake?!
Doing something that makes me feel special—a solo getaway, a spa day, or even just a quiet afternoon with a book.

The Bigger Lesson: You Deserve to Celebrate Yourself

This isn’t just about birthdays—it’s about creating space in your life to honor yourself. CUE: Snoop Dogg saying, “I wanna thank me!” So many of us are used to pouring into others without taking time to refill our own cup. What would it look like if you reclaimed one day—your birthday, or any day—as a time to prioritize YOU?

Community Reflection: How Do You Celebrate Yourself?

This week, I challenge you to think about ways you can prioritize your joy and rest—on your birthday and beyond. Drop a comment below and let me know: How do you celebrate yourself? And if you haven’t been, how can you start?
