In honor of Latinx Heritage Month, I’m excited to share a collection of stories crafted to ignite wonder and reflection. These stories intertwine my cultural roots with my personal journey, with the aim of highlighting how they have fueled my own growth and reflection. I invite you to read these stories and engage with the reflection questions provided. May they inspire and resonate with your own journey!

Whew… life be life-ING! Lately, it feels as if we’ve been navigating a sea of uncertainty, struggling to find our footing, and feeling overwhelmed by the constant demands of life. Even simple tasks like running errands, cooking, catching up on emails, and tidying up can leave me absolutely drained and ready for bed by 6PM!

Taking Inventory During Overwhelm

When I find myself feeling this way, I start to take inventory of my habits: Is this deep exhaustion due to poor sleep patterns? Am I missing key nutrients in my diet? Am I sluggish because I haven’t prioritized movement? WHAT. IS. IT?

Instead of letting these questions spin out of control, I’ve learned to shift my approach. Ruminating can magnify those feelings of overwhelm, leaving us physically, emotionally, and mentally spent. So here’s what I do instead.

Conducting a Mental Audit

Taking a mental audit of our thoughts, feelings, and habits can help stop the mental rollercoaster before it spirals into burnout. If we don’t take the time to reflect on what’s weighing us down, we risk getting stuck in perpetual overwhelm. During these moments, I often turn to my mother’s wise words: “no te ahogues en un vaso de agua,” or “don’t drown in a glass of water.”

This is her way of reminding me to pause, breathe, and take stock of everything I’m juggling. Does everything on my plate really require the same level of prioritization, attention, and care? Do all these tasks need to be done at once? Are other factors such as tight deadlines, and little sleep magnifying problems that aren’t as serious as they seem?

Creating Ease and Practicing Grace

Those words taught me that instead of amplifying the voice of my anxieties, I should focus on creating ease and practicing grace. When I choose to center my thoughts on what’s wrong, I limit my view of what’s going right. By shifting my mindset, I open up space for more possibilities, positivity and mental clarity to enter my life.

Ask yourself:

  • Which areas of your life bring you ease and highlight your strengths? Do you spend time focusing on those, or does a negative bias pull your attention towards what’s going wrong?
  • How does your mindset—whether focusing on the positive or dwelling on the negative—impact your overall outlook on life?
  • Is your current approach serving your goals and how you want to live?
  • What are the “glasses of water” in your life that feel overwhelming? Do you need a lifeline, or is it time to shift your mindset and refocus on solutions?
