The Oldest Sibling Effect – How Leadership, Ambition & Burnout Intersect

by Ana Vargas

If you’re the oldest sibling, you already know—we move differently. Since childhood, I’ve carried the weight of responsibility, the unspoken expectation to lead, protect, and pave the way for those coming behind me. I can still hear my mother saying,“Lo que tú hagas, harán igual los que van atrás de ti” Being the firstborn is its own form of leadership training, but what happens when the ambition that drives us also burns us out?

The Weight of Leadership From a Young Age

Growing up as the eldest, I learned quickly that my actions weren’t just about me. I set the example, helped raise siblings, navigated challenges first so they wouldn’t have to. It made me resourceful, strong, and capable—but it also meant I carried a constant pressure to succeed and put others first.

How This Shaped My Ambition & Direction

  • I learned to be proactive and independent, because people depended on me.
  • I developed a strong sense of responsibility, making sure everyone else was okay.
  • I became an overachiever, constantly striving for excellence.
  • I felt like I had to “have it all together,” even when I didn’t.

Burnout: When Leadership Becomes Exhaustion

But here’s the thing—when you’ve spent your whole life leading, you don’t always know how to pause. I took on too much, too often—professionally and personally—until I hit a wall. Burnout wasn’t just exhaustion; it was a wake-up call. I realized that always leading doesn’t mean always carrying everything alone.

What I’ve Learned & How I’m Reclaiming Balance

  • Asking for support is sign of strength, not weakness. I’ll keep saying it—until you, we, until all of us truly believe it and start living by it. We are better working together.
  • Boundaries matter. You don’t have to be everything for everyone. Your NO is powerful—full, complete, and worthy of respect.
  • Rest isn’t a reward—it’s a requirement. If you’ve been following my booklists, you already know—rest is how we realign, reflect, and move with clarity.
  • Legacy isn’t about doing it all—it’s about doing what aligns. Holding onto the label of being “the one who handles things” or “the one who stays ahead” means nothing if those things don’t align with your deepest desires—or if you’ve never even paused to consider what’s possible. What do you TRULY want from your time here on this Earth?
